THE CHILDREN ACT –JAN McEWAN

A . What pushed Fiona to break the rules deciding to visit Adam?

After getting all the details about Adam’s case, Fiona considered the elements not enough for her to take a decision.  Having different cultural code of  references and coming from different environments, Fiona couldn’t make sense of such a young man desired to die. As a consequence she decided to meet Adam though she was breaking a  juridical rule.

B . Why was Adam so impressed by her?

Adam remained fascinated by Fiona because he discovered a different way of thinking. He found in her a possibility, a going forth and an alternative choice. What he felt is well expressed in the fourth chapter, where Adam explains to Fiona: “You were calm, you listened, you asked questions, you made some comments. That was the point. It’s this thing you have. It added up to something. You didn’t have to say it. A way of thinking and talking.”

C . Why did she kissed him?

Before letting him go, Fiona kissed Adam, their lips touched for an instant. At that moment she could have stepped away from him, on the contrary she lingered on his lips tasting their flavor. The kiss reveals that Fiona was secretly attracted by Adam and deeply bound to him. Indeed when she met him for the first time, Fiona remained fascinated by Adam’s beauty and brilliance, by his innocence and vivacity. She was captured both by his thoughts and his face, therefore when their lips accidently met, she didn’t drawn back.
