Shakespeare set Hamlet mostly in Elsionore, a remote royal castle in Denmark. This is obviously an indoor scenery, but there are also outdoors ones. "Hamlet" has got a medieval setting. Indeed, the material of the play, that is story line, is medieval.
Immediately, in the first scene, Shakespeare creates a mysterious atmosphere,with the suspense caused by the ghost and questions that regard him. The tone is dark and contemplative. The first scene took place at 1AM in the night, when Polonio, Francisco and Oratio were talking about the presence of a ghost, which appears only during night. Indeed, at the end of scene I, the ghost was about to speak but the cock crew. Thus, Oratio decided to speak with Hamlet. Three "Hamlet" are presented:
-"Hamlet", the name of the tragedy;
-Hamlet, the murdered King;
-Hamlet, the main character.
Following scenes took also place in Elsoinore's castle, both outside and inside. This castle, in which Hamlet came like a light in, is inhabited by corrupted people. The ghost will appear to Hamlet and tell him to revenge his murder. He will be considered by the Danish royal family as mad.
