Analysis of the poem “One Art”

The title:

Reading the title without reading the poem, I aspect the poem might be about art because in the title there is the word “Art”.

Moreover the word “art” is written in capital letter probably because it is a keyword, and therefore it is important for the poem.

The layout:

The structure of the poem is arranged in five stanzas of three lines each, while the last stanza is made of four lines.

Structure:

The poem is arranged in five stanzas called tercet and one stanza called quatrain.

Theme:

The speaker is talking about how it is easy to lose things and people due to loss of memory, lack of time or to distraction.

After reading the text:

I don’t find the text particularly difficult because the words used are everyday words but to understand it well you have to read it several times very carefully.

Reading the poem I felt sadness and a sense of loss because it talks about losses.

Rhyme scheme, tone, speaking voice adressing:

The poem’s rhyme scheme is ABA in the first five stanzas and ABAA in the last one.

If I heard the poet reciting this poem, probably her tone would be sad because it talks about losses and it isn’t an argument that arouses positive emotions.

According to me, the poet addresses isn’t the reader, but the person she has lost.

Language:

The register is informal because there is the contracted form, the imperative and the use of the pronoun “you”. Moreover there are a lot of common words such as places, houses, door keys, names and watch.

Figures of speech:

In the text there are some figures of speech such as metaphors, enjambments, assonances, alliterations and consonances.

Metaphor because “One Art” may suggest that the art of losing and the art of writing are the same.

Enjambment becauseto be able to understand many verses you must also read the next one.

Assonance, alliteration and consonace beacuse there are many letters that are repeated several times and there are words placed close to each other that have similar sound.

General informations:

The prevailing tense is the present, but there is also the imperative; most verbs are at the active form, but there are also some to the passive form.
