Changez is the protagonist and the narrator of the Reluctant Fundamentalist . He is a pakistan man who went to college in Princeton, USA. He can be defined a round character because he shows a parabola during the novel. Beside, his name “Changez”is a simbolic name: the intelligent reader may suppose that during the novel he undergoes a change. Indeed at first he loves USA and he works hard to be accepted by his american friends believing in the Amercan Dream. Yet Changez’s Pakistani roots do not become hindrance for his development. After the 11 /9 his perspective changes: he faces an increasing discrimination. He feels otherness, displayed between Americans. He perceives something wrong in people eyes, in the suspiscious way with whom they look at him. Making a connection with the text of Rushdie “About Movers” Changez is a migrant because he unstucks from his native country, in particular he is an emigrant. However he is also a newcomer of USA because he has to face with the difficulties of being accepted by the Other. In front of the tragedy Changez puts in doubt his identity: his first response to the Twin Tower attack is to feel grateful. He tried desperately to assert his identity and to became a globalized citizen, but at the end he come back to Pakistan. This experience makes Changez more mature than once. He comes up with the awareness of the capitalism contraddiction and his story wants to be a hidden critique of the economic system. |
