As a post-colonial writer, Mohsin Hamid creates a protagonist that addresses the reader of the novel. Hamid wants the ideal reader to read between the lines of Changez's characterisation. When he leaves his Native Country, he's pushed by the ideal "American Dream" of wellness and economical security. At the beginnig he seems to get totally integrated in the new country, also due to his brillant studies in Princeton. His situation changes after he meets Erica, an american girl with who he falls in love with. His same name "Changez" contains the world Change, that will involve his mentality. After the twin tower's collapse, happened while he was working in the Philippines, there's a development in his sense of pattriotism and loyalty to his Native Country. He feels American's hatred against people of his country, and he's also refered as a "Fucking Arab". This kind of feelings have a very important influence on his ideals and there are some consequences on his physical aspect, for example he stops shaving his beard as Islamic fundamentalists do. In conclusion, during the novel the intelligent reader can understand the development and the change that the protagonist undergoes, becoming a fundamentallist, a totally different person from the young guy who left Pakistan to study in Princeton. |
