Winter is a poem written by Walter de la Mare.

Reading only the title, in my opinion the poem is about the winter season, such as snow covering fields, cold wind blowing, smoke from the fireplaces turned on in the houses and maybe also warm clothes of people.

Regarding its layout, Winter in arranged into three stanzas, each of which is made of five lines.

The rhyme scheme is AABCA for the first stanza and DDEFE for the third stanza, while the second stanza is devoid of rhymes.

When I read it I felt a sense of solitude, despair, calm and freedom. Its message is hidden and its interpretation requires careful reading.

The register is fairly formal and the language is polished. There aren’t lots of common words, so I had trouble understanding the meaning of many expressions.

Moreover in the poem there are some figures of speech, such as metaphor and oxymorons.

Winter is a really amazing poem because it highlights the spirit of the winter season through glimpses of different situations.
