The analysis of “She Qwelt Among the Untrodden Ways”
Considering the title
The title suggests the poem is about a girl who lives in unknow place. It invites curiosity about the identity of “she” and the reason why she attends unknow places.
The denotative analysis
The poem stars introducing the girl. She lives alone and very few people know the girl. the second stanza raises her beauty which is not immediately visible but it is precious. The end of the poem announced her death and the poet underlines the girl’s importance to him. The poet through this poem wants to show what happens if people don’t act. He loved the girl, but he discovered too late her importance.
The structure analysis
The text is arranged into three quartains of different lenght. Each stanza has its function: the first introduces the protagonist of the poem, the second describes the character using metaphors and the third confesses the importance of the girl.
The connotative analysis
The poem follows the ryhme scheme “ABAB”. There are some figures of speech, for example, two metaphors in the second stanza. She is linked to “a violet” and to “a fair star”. There is an economic use of words, this is to emphasizes the beauty of the poet’s love. The semanthic field is the nature as the matter of fact the girl is associated firstly to a spring, then to a violet and finally to the fair of Venus.
