Turning a direct speech into an indirect one

Frances and Ian’s dad suggests to toast the new year and, afterwards, he asks for his family New Year’s resolutions. Frances states that she is going to look for something more exciting to do, such as a new job. Then she asks for Ian’s planes, if he is going to get a life and stop biting his nails. Their mum recommends him to get a haircut more often this year and to take school more seriously. Eventually, under his mum’s prompt, he says that he will start checking out the universities. After that, the whole family begins to talk about Frances and Ian’s birthday party (they decide to throw a joint party). Frances asserts that the restaurant where she works caters for parties at the Feather’s hotel and that it has got some great rooms (for parties); so she will enquire about how much it would cost to hire one of them. To Ian’s surprise, dad proposes a school hall in order to save more money that they could spend on a good band. He has heard of a really good band called “The Catfish Brothers”. All the family agrees with dad’s idea. At the end, dad estimates that they could each invite not over 50 people.
