WARNING Just considering the title the reader may expect the poem to be about something he has to warning. Maybe it is such a suggest about something, or maybe it is an order. Taking into consideration the layout you can notice that this is a poem thanks to the lines. It is arranged in four stanzas, the first has eleven lines, the second one and the third one have four lines and the last one has three lines, so it isn’t organized in a regular pattern. In the first stanza the poetess writes what she will do when she will be older. In the second one she explain what you can do when you are old. In the third one she says what you have to do when you are younger, because you have to be an example for the children. In the last stanza the poetess asks if she ought to practice a little now so people won’t be surprised when she will begin to be old and wear purple. There are a lot of run-on-lies, because there such a list of things you can do when you are old and another one of things that you have to do when you are younger. In the fourth line of the first stanza there is the alliteration of the letter s just to create the idea of a lament. This poem has been written to convey the message that when you are old you can have some behaviors that you cannot have when you are younger. Indeed when you are younger you have to respect some “norms” that you don’t have to respect when you are older, because it is normal to be different and a little bit “crazy” as you become older. |
