The text belongs to Romeo and Juliet and it is a part of scene four Act One. Considering the title an intelligent reader can understand that the sonnet is about love between two people, in particular about the Romeo first kiss’s to Juliet. Considering the structure, the 14 lines form a sonnet. The sonnet is formed by threequatrains (ABAB) and a couplet in the end. Romeo speaks in the first quatrain and Juliet in the second. In the third quatrain Romeo taking three lines and Juliet one and in the couplet they share it. This structure rappresents a perfect Shakespeare’s sonnet . Shakespeare uses a sonnet because it is traditionally associated with love between two people. Reading the text, the speaking voice in the first quatrain is Romeo. Romeo speaks with Juliet. Romeo describes Juliet and he is ready to kiss her. Juliet is compared to a “holy shrine”and this underlines the use of a religius code. Romeo fells inferior to her (“unworthiest”) because she is sacred and untouchable. The speaking voice uses the verb “to profane” to highlight that Juliet is something of special and religious. Romeo’s lips are as two blushing pilgrims ready to smooth a tender kiss. The use of “blushing pilgrims” has a meaning: “blushing” rappresents the Romeo’s love to Juliet and “pilgrims” rappresents pilgrims who go in pilgrimage in search of graces and this rappresents the Romeo’s will to kiss Juliet. Romeo to express the desire to kiss Juliet uses a religious code because it was the only one he could use at that time. In the text there are two sematic fields: the body and the spirit (religion). The field of body is rappresented by hand, lips, kiss, hand… The field of religion is rappresented by holy shrine, pilgrims, devotion, saints, prayer, saint, pray, prayer… Romeo and Juliet shows their love desire by religius concerns. In the second quatrain, the speaking voice is Juliet who answers to Romeo. She has a haughty tone and she wants to tease Romeo. Juliet underlines that Romeo is touching her to much with his hands. Juliet continues saying that saints have hands to pray plaicing palm against palm. “the palmers’kiss” rappresents the prayer that every saint wants. The palm rappresents the movement of the lips, indead Romeo wants to put his lips on Juliet’s lips. In this lines, the religius code describes the physical contact that Romeo wants. In the last quatrain, both the protagonists speak. Romeo asks if saints have lips and holy and Juliet answers saying that saints use lips to pray. With the use of religius code, Juliet stimulates Romeo to say a prayer or to kiss her. The prayer is the kiss because Romeo wants to get the kiss as pilgrims want to pray. In this way, they can kiss without problems. In the last couplet, Romeo and Juliet lead with the two last verses. Juliet says that saints don’t move during the pray so she asks to Romeo not to move while they take the prayer’effect. The monologue finishes with the kiss between Romeo and Juliet and Romeo is worthy of a kiss. In this lines the tone is more passionate and fluctuates because both want the kiss. Concluding, this monologue rappresents the love between two people (Romeo and Juliet). At the time, the only way to describe a passion for a woman was the religion. In dead Romeo to describes Juliet and to show his desire to kiss her, he uses a religius code. Their love isn’t limited to physical attraction but it is seriously.
