The title is about a woman who lived in a place that was not known. This intriguing title creates expectations in the reader about the identity of the “She”, the reason why she lived there and what the “untrodden ways” are like.

The text is a poem, which is organised into three quatrains, where the lines are of different length.

In the first stanza the writer introduces the identity of the girl by saying that few people knew her, and even fewer loved her. He also introduces and briefly describes the place in which the girl used to live. In the second stanza the poet invites the reader to consider the unique quality of the girl’s beauty, even if it is not apparent. In fact, he describes her as a precious yet isolated beautiful young woman. The function of the third stanza is to communicate to the reader that the girl was very important to the poet. He states that after her death very few people knew she was no longer alive, but to the narrator it made a huge difference.

Regarding the sound devices the poet chose to use, the poem has an ABAB rhyme scheme, which gives a sort of melodic quality to the slow rhythm of the text. This is also thanks to the enjambements. Wordsworth, the author, as a true Romantic writer celebrates a girl called Lucy by associating her to nature. He compares her, through different figures of speech, to a violet growing close to a stone covered in moss, and to a star which is the only one in the sky. In order to do so, he makes use of rhetorical figures: a metaphor and a simile. However, the poet understands how much he cared for the young woman only after she's dead. Moreover, the lyric concerns rural life, following the Romantic tradition.
