THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH NOVEL 

 The novel is a narrative form of comminucation. It narrates about characters that live in a precise setting. There are some events and situation connected by the story told.

The story is verbalised by different narrative techniques, you can have a third person narrator ( he can be external or omniscent or intrusive when he is inside the text, he can speak from the point of view of a character or he can use the stream of consciousness technique. He can use telling or showing or he can be a first person narrator or the first personnarrator, who is also the protagonist, the eye-witness.

The setting  consists of references to space and time, also investigated from a symbolic or metaphoric point of view. 

A traditional structural element of the novel is the character. He or she can beeither a flatter or a round character, that shows a development along the story.

 Novels are written to be read and therefore, the novelist who speak through is literary choices has always ideal reader in mind.

The analisis of characterisation considered how a character comes to life. A narrator can choose different element to portrait his character. Element of characterisation:

Name,

Surname,

Language use or dialect use,

Way of thinking,

Way of speaking,

cultural background,

family background,

physical description,

reputation,

peculiarity.

 

Textual analisis is not a summary, it starts with:

  1. brain storming of the title of the novel, expectations and curiosity raise by the title.
  2. structure (chatters, scenes). Each chatter is organized into sequences, each sequence has got a specific function in the chatter. last but not least all the connotative elements.
  3. language sounds,choice of words,verb tenses used (phonological level), metaphores and all the figures of speech, and the functions they have inside the novel (semantic level), word order (syntact level).

 The novel was born in the 18th century. Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Dafoe is considered the english achetype of the novel. In english there are two words:

NOVEL: is a literary communication forms that tells about something that tends to realism.

ROMANCE: is more connected to story of fantasy, fairy tales, virtual loves story.

The novel develop by middle class, who became really important at the time aand the novelists of the period became their mouth speakers.
