notes 17th April 2019 THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH NOVEL The novel is a narrative form of comminucation. It narrates about characters that live in a precise setting. There are some events and situation connected by the story told. The story is verbalised by different narrative techniques, you can have a third person narrator ( he can be external or omniscent or intrusive when he is inside the text, he can speak from the point of view of a character or he can use the stream of consciousness technique. He can use telling or showing or he can be a first person narrator or the first personnarrator, who is also the protagonist, the eye-witness. The setting consists of references to space and time, also investigated from a symbolic or metaphoric point of view. A traditional structural element of the novel is the character. He or she can beeither a flatter or a round character, that shows a development along the story. Novels are written to be read and therefore, the novelist who speak through is literary choices has always ideal reader in mind. The analisis of characterisation considered how a character comes to life. A narrator can choose different element to portrait his character. Element of characterisation: Name, Surname, Language use or dialect use, Way of thinking, Way of speaking, cultural background, family background, physical description, reputation, peculiarity.
