THE NOVEL

 

The novel is a narrative form of communication. It narrates about characters who live in a specific settle. There is a storyline that tells about eventsand situations conetted to the story told.

The story is verbalized by differents narrative tecniques. You can have a third persone narrator (he can be external, onniscient it can be also intrusive and when he is inside the text he can speak from the point of view of a character or adopt the interior monologue of charactrer or he can also use the stream of consciusness tecnique) he can use telling or showing or he can be the protagonist, the eyewitness and the narrator itself.

The setting consists of references to space and time also investigated from a symbolic or metaphoric point of view.

A traditional structrural element all the novel is the the character.

A character can be either a flact character or a round character that shows a development along the story. Novels are written to be read ad therefore, the novelist who speaks through his literary choises as always an ideal reader in mind.

The novel has also been consideredthe narrative character’s parenxcelence.

The analysis of characterisation considers how a character comes to life. A narrator can choose different elements to portray his characters.

Textual analysis is not: a summaring

The analysis of a novel starts with:

Brainstorming of the title of the novel: expectations and curiosities raised by title.

Structure (chapters, scenes or not scenes and not chapters at all). Each chapter is organized into sequences, each sequence has got a specific function in the economy of the chapters.

After that you should take into consideration action and situation expressed by characters whose characterisation should be analised refearing to the elements already quoted and last but not least from an its connotative elements: language sounds (phonological level), choise of words, verb tenses used, metaphors (semantic level) words order or syntax (sintattic level) and all the figures of speach and the function they have inside the communicative speech have a novel is.

 

The novel was born in the 18th century. Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe is considered the english archetype of the novel. In english there are two words:

Novel literary communication forms that tells about something thata tens to realism so that the reader may suspend disbelief and be convinced that the novel tells about life.

Romance that is more connetted to story of fantasy, fairy tails, virtual love sotries.

 

The novel developed in 18th century as it was mainlt the product and the expression of middle class values. The middle class has become really important at the time and the novelist all the period become their mouth speakers
