In this text I am going to analyze the characterization of The nun of Monza, a character from I Promessi Sposi by Alessandro Manzoni. From the text the intelligent reader can understand that the nun is an unconventional one. The narrator begins the characterization saying that the nun is a lady before being a nun. This term refers to the social status, indeed she is a very rich woman. Usually you don’t use the term “lady” for a nun and this makes you understand that there’s something that doesn’t fit. Alessandro Manzoni begins to describe about the nun writing about her clothes. There is a frequent chromatic contrast between white, symbol of purity, and black, which represents something shady. This makes you understand how the woman was mysterious. The inner contrast is also highlighted by the messy hair which comes out from the veil, in contrast to the care she has on dressing. She wasn’t easy to decode also because the eyes changed quickly look based on who she had in front. It showed pride, but also search of affection and correspondence, sometimes aged hate, instead occasionally the eyes were motionless and fixed. This makes understand how she was mysterious. |
