The Importance of Relationships in Life After analysing the listening included in the unit People and Relationships, I could identify the presence of a deeper concept behind the interview recorded. To give some context, it would be relevant to consider the structure of the word “relationship” which is made up of relation and ship. It can be noticed, that “ship” is widely present in many English substantives such as scholarship, friendship, all words referring to people. The thesis I could identify and I am going to present is: the development of somebody’s identity depends on the context and backgrounds where they grow up and live. Therefore, relationships and identity are strictly linked and affect each other. I recognise myself in the stages mentioned by the psychologist in the interview. For example, I remember that when I started primary school my behaviour changed a lot due to the different environment and people around me. I also believe that every stage of life is determined by the people around you. Being a teenager, I am aware that this is a delicate age where I am expected to take important decisions that will influence my future in the long term. One of this decisions, includes what discipline to study at university or what type of career I would like to undertake after my studies. This is why I believe it’s essential to have the right people around you. I have a good relationship with my family and in particular with my sister, even though she is living abroad. The most important relationship for me so far is the one with my sister, because she represents an example for me and an important point of reference when I need some help or advices. She is older than me; therefore, she has already experienced the stage of adolescence and can easily understand my feelings and emotions. What’s also important in our relationship is that we have very different characters and attitudes that complement each other. In some cases, we have opposite approaches and this helps me especially because I can always get a different point of view no matter what the discussion is about. I am sure that my sister will always be open and tell me what she believes it’s better even if this is different from my thinking. I would never refuse the relationship with her as she is not only a sister but also a best friend. As I mentioned before, I also have a great relationship with my parents, as we get along very well. I am happy of this because I know that not everybody at my age has this type of relation with them. To conclude, I believe I am a very lucky teenager as I have a strong relationship with my family that will always support me in this important stage of my life.
