In the first chapter the reader know the novel is told by Changez’s point of view, as a speaker, and the interlocutor is an unknown man. The protagonist, Changez, represents Pakistan with its culture, whereas the man identified as an American stands for his country, America. The function of the chapter is to counterpose Eastern society to Western’s one, with their costumes and religions, by them stereotypes. Indeed the reader understand the difficulties of a multicultural relationship by the two characters’ behavior, especially from the American. Changez tells he is a lover of America even if he comes from Pakistan, in this way he brings the reader to an open-minded direction and to understand the attitude of the novel of a passing of prejudices. In addiction the function of the first chapter is to introduce the protagonist and his life in New York. |
