In the present text i am going to explain first chapter's function of the novel “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” by Mohsin Hamid.

The function of the first chapter of the novel is: first of all to introduce the protagonist, Changez. In this way the reader can create a idea about him and his attitudes. As well as the title it creates expectation in the reader and it invites curiosity about protagonist's identity.

Secondly it brings to surface the setting: the novel takes place in Lahore, Pakistan, where Changez is having a tea with a unknown interlocutor. The interlocutor can be considered a listener, because the narrator never allows him to reply.Changez tells about his life in USA. Quite the opposite you don't know nothing about the stranger. It's only quoted that he could be American.

The narrative technique is a dramatic monologue : in this way protagonist's point of view reaches the reader effortless. Changez's way of speaking is formal and polite.

Finally from the first chapter you can foresee some themes of the novel, like prejudice and discrimination toward Muslims and Islamic world.
