THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST: FIRST CHAPTER FUNCTION

The first chapter always has an essential role in a novel. Indeed he has to present the main themes and focus readers' attention without spoilering what would happen next.

This function is present in “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” too. The narrator starts introducing himself to his American interlocutor and telling him some facts about his previous life in the USA. For example, he narrate about how did he gat his job at Underwood Samson which make him change his point of view in the following chapters. The reader is so invited to continue the reading to understand how the plot will evolve.

During the first part of the plot Changez tries to estabilish a deep relationship with his interlocutor. The writer made this choice because he is going to tell him some personal facts and so he needs to trust him. At the beginning he doesn't semm to be critic with the USA. This happen because the whole plot least in America and so he doesn't want to cause stange reactions in his interlocutor.

Morover, the writer can't reveal yet the reasons which will cause an interior change in the protagonist.

Reading the first chapter I felt curious in reading the followings to understand how the situation will evolve. Indeed the writer was smart in introduce the two levals of plot which seem to be different and so the writer in invited to find how are they linked.
