In the present text I am  going to analyse Wordsworth’s poem “She Dwelt among the Untrodden Ways” to discover what the poet wants to make understand to  the readers and make some considerations about the poem.

The title suggests what the poem is about and creates curiosity about the identity of “she”. As well as the reason why she attends hidden places. Through the words use in the title, readers undestand that the language of the poem is quiet archaic. Indeed the term “Dwelt” is mostly removed and the poet maybe used it to catch the attention of the reader and to convince him to go on with the reading.

The poem is arranged into three quartains and the text is written following the rhyme scheme ABAB. it is clear that each stanza plays its own role and after a quickly reading the reader is able to understand what the poem tells.  After an introductory stanza it is possible to know that the text is about a girl living near the “springs of Dove” and she is not appreciate because she lives in contact with the nature.  The second quartain develops a comparison raising the beauty of the girl, however the identidy is still unknown. This emphasizes the curiosity of the reader and he has still a reason to go on reading.  The comparison and the judgment give a positive description of the girl who appears to the poet very precious and beatiful. The poem ends in the last stanza with the discovery of gir identity.  Her name’s Lucy, very few pwople knew her. When she died the poet underlines Lucy’s importance for him, her death creates a deep difference for him.

Moving on with the more detailed connotative analysis the readers will soon realize that  devices used, for example the echo effects and the  frequent use of exlamations, have been implemented to express  the poet’s feelings and emotions for the character called Lucy. Also the sound devices helps to make mistery and to create a sense of distant place where Lucy lives alone. To reinforce this effect the poet uses words like “untrodden”, “none” ,“very few”,  “ only one” and “unkonown”.  All that quoted so far contributes to make the poem very effectual. As a matter of fact  the readers are driven by the desire to discover the name of the girl which is revealed only in the last stanza. Her name is relevant because it refers to the word “light” and therefore she is the light in the poet’s life. It follows that the simile “fair as a star” creates a positive idea of her beauty which is also desribe“ a violet by a massy stone”. Saying this the poet means that Lucy is a shy girl who has not got the courage to show herself. Finally she is also a star “when only one is shining”, this bring to her a feature of uniqueness and preciouness.

After a careful analysis the reader is able to understand the following message of the poem: it is important to appreciate things unrecognized by society and do not waste time. The poet was immensely fell in love with Lucy but she died without know these feelings. I am perfectly agree with the theme of this poem. People are used to appreciate only the visible things without linger on what is “untrodden”,  risking to lose a unique experience. the people life is very chaotic, as a matter of fact time is never enough. I deeply convinced about the importance to recognise foundamental things and do the best to get them.
