by 2018-11-19)
- (
The suit: it is told as if symbol of rich, Western people; indeed it is an expensive clothe (with its single vent, and button-down shirt)
Gothic buildings: their height inspired greatness
Princeton: one of the major American colleges; it made he think his life was “a film in which he was the star and everything was possible”; American life showed in films, actually. The idea of Princeton was prominent: a beautiful campus, the best professors, the best students, even if the reality was different.
Underwood Samson: symbol of American economy, or better its inclination toa cold capitalism
Jim: its abilities made him ane example of how the American Dream worked, and took to success. He was in the same condition of Changez, but he made it: now he's rich, important, because he worked hard and believed in USA
He's Hungry: only who's hungry can make it; Changez really believes he's better than other people, he is “special”
His fellows while he's in Greece: they are different; Changez understands their flaws, their being spoiled and convinced of their superiority. Anyway, it doesn't prevent him for having fun with them
Erica: as the reader will lately understand, she is symbol of America; being Changez's vision of USA still an idealistic, full of hope one, so is his vision of Erica. She's wonderful, attractive, powerful and proud. She's “clearly better” than other girls (USA's global dominance); as her love with him seems possible, Changez's American dream seems sure.
The travel itself: he is travelling with the elite of the country, in one of the most beautiful places of the world, living in one of the most expensive ways possible: he is part of the “important” society, it made him think he deserves everything (as his fellows do, even if this annoyes him)
