In the present text I am going to analyse William Wordsworth's poem “She Dwelt among Untrodden Ways” to discover the poet's message and make my personal consideration, after an analysis of the text.
The title invites the reader to find out who “she” of the poem is, her identity, as well as the reason why she lives in a hidden place. The reader can understand that the language the title exploits is partly archaic (“Dwelt”).
The layout shows clear the poem is arranged into three quatrains ( stanzas of four lines each) and the text was written in alternate rhymes (ABAB). Each stanza has a specific role in the poem. The first is an introductory one, where the reader can understand that the poem is about a girl living in Scotland, near “springs of Dove”, a place rather hidden in close contact with nature. The second quatrain developes a comparision and gives a judgement on the lady, fully positives, who's name is still unknown. She is unique and precious as are all rare things. In the following stanza ends the poem: the reader's curiosity about girl's identity is finally satisfied. Her name is Lucy and only few people know that, including the poet. When she dies, this made a difference for the poet.
As regards connotative analysis, it can be found a echo effect that permeates the poem , in order to communicate poet's emotion linked to the memory of the lady. There is also a frequent use of exclamation marks which trasmit the feeling of the poet. Moreover the use of long sounds creates the idea of vastity and distant place where the lady lives. This idea becomes stronger with the use of words as “Untrodden” , “none” , “very few”. The curiosity of the reader is developed by poet's choiche to quote lady's name only in the last stanza. Her name, Lucy, is related to the idea of light : she brings it to poet's life. The use of metaphor “a violet by a mossy stone” underlines the shyness and preciosity of Lucy's beauty. The simile “fair as a star” creates the idea of distance from her beauty and her uniqueness.
After a careful analysis of the poem “She Dwelt among Untrodden Ways”, one can understand the poet's message , about his memory of a lady, Lucy , who is remembered for her beauty and rareness.
