In the present text I am going to analyze the most significant sentences that are present in the first chapter of the Reluctant Fundamentalist. The first thing who invades reader's mind is the formality of Changez, he seems so take distance from his interlocutor. He asks the stranger if he nedds help, through this sentence the reader can immediately know Changez's personality, who is very polite. There's a frequent use of the subject "I" to focus the reader's attention on the narrator of the story. Then he puts the most important theme of the novel, the problem of prejudices, saying to the stranger not to be afraid of him due to his beard and to reassure him Changez says he loves America. So by this sentence the reader can understand that the interlocutor is an American. Moving on Changez says that the American probably is on a mission, so he thinks the stranger may be some kind of agent. Then Changzreveals that he is native of Pakistan but he knows well the american language and culture, this suggests that Changez has spent his past in America. Moreover he describes the stranger's characteristic by explaining why he knows he is an American, then Changez asks him why he came here suggesting that he came for a cup of tea.
