In the first chapter the writer only introduces to the reader the characters and the setting; he don't describes meticolousy them. The writer doesn't want tell everything about characters since chapter one, he develops then during the course of the novel simultaneously the plot underline their changes with time.

So in my opinion the first chapter have the function to give the guidelines and the keys on the reader to be able to go on reading.
