CHANGEZ’S EXCITEMENT ABOUT AMERICA (CH1,2)

Changez introduces himself as a member of a Pakistani noble family which is no longer surrounded by prosperity. He was therefore in need of education aid in order to apply to Princeton University; he could rely on his only skills and assessments gained at school, where he proved himself a promise. One can easily understand from the outset that the protagonist owned many qualities that are personally praised by American businessmen, so Changez’s admiration for what the States could offer was constantly fed by his own skills: it is in some way natural for him to feel passionate about America. He could have also regained what his family was progressively losing: wealth. The most evident element in chapter 1 proving Changez’s “pro-America” mind-set was his hiring at Underwood Samson & Company, thanks to which his path towards greater life-expectations had begun in the best way.

Chapter 2 is nothing but another evidence of Changez’s Americanisation: his monologue with the unknown American now concerns his trips with friends, his spending money, the beginning of love affairs with Erica. To sum up, there are here many elements showing that his new Western lifestyle feels to suit him perfectly, and that the old Eastern manners served him no longer.
