In the famous soliloquy "To Be or not To Be" Hamlet is asking himself and people in general what is the meaning of life and existence. He wonders wether life it's worth living. Hamlet is not actually talking to himsel since the adresse isn't expressessed in the singular form, but plural. Shakekespeare uses the expression to be in its infinitive form in order to include many meanings in the concept of living as existing. Moreover, he underlines the wideness of the concept in its infinite form. To suffer and to take arms are avversatives. Suffering connotates fragility whiletaking arms , by contrast, is to become a warrior. The resistance is an active and concrete action (moving arms) The Hamletic doubt between giving up on life by just letting things happen in misery or taking a concrete action to takle his suffarance. In lines 5-10 an alternative is introduced, to die and therefore end his suffarance by also avoiding the problem. The obstacle that occurs is the fear of what might happen after death. In lines 15-19, Hamlet liststhe avversities and misery of life: the passing of the time, political oppression, social discrimination, unreturned love, the delays of justice, insolence, and ingratitude. |
