Exercise 1

Hi Jo,
I have to make a decision about next year. I can stay here or go to the same sixth form college as you. So, I've got a few questions.
Firstly, do you have to wear a uniform? Sixth formers at our school don’t have to wear a uniform but they have to look smart- they can't wear jeans, for example.
Next question, how much homework do you have to do every day? A friend who is a year older than me here has to do about three hours of homework a day but he doesn’t have to do anything at the weekend.
I think that's all for now.
Thanks.
Seth

Exercise 2

o   C: l'm not sure I want to be in the school play.

o   D: Well, you 'don't have to be in it. It's your choice but it's great fun. Of course, it takes a lot of time .People who want to be in the play must go to Drama Club every Tuesday and Thursday after school. They 'don't have to learn their words and they mustn't be late because everyone has to wait for them. Of course, you don't have to act. You can help with the music or the clothes.

o   C: What do you think? Should I do it?

o   D: Of course. You 'must see Mrs Green at lunchtime and tell her. She needs the list of names today.

Exercise 3

Hi David,
Well, I'm in the school play! I C don’t have to say much. The first meeting is tomorrow. We B mustn’t be late. Mrs Green says that a good actor A has to t be well-organized and brave. That’s why, in the first meeting, we all have to stand in front of the group and say some lines from a play. Luckily, we A don’t have to sing! I should find something that I know well – maybe something from Romeo and Juliet. I’m studying that in English.
Anyway, I C must do my homework now.
See you soon.
Cathy

Exercise 4

o   Mrs Green: Cathy, your turn

o   Cathy: This is from Romeo and Juliet. 'A rose by any other name would smell as sweet’.

o   Mrs Green: You must say it louder. I can't hear you. And you should look at us, not at the floor.

o   Cathy: should I do it again?

o   Mrs Green: Yes, please

o   Cathy: Er... er... 'A sweet by any other name would smell like a rose.

o   Mrs Green: Stop, stop. I think you should sit for a few minutes. You're very nervous. Melanie ,you go next.

o   Cathy :I feel terrible. What should I say? Should I go home and forget about the school play?

o   David: No, you shouldn't. You should wait with me and watch the others. Look, they're making mistakes too. You don’t have to speak again today. You can ask Mrs Green if you can do it on Thursday.

o   Cathy: No, .I don’t have to wait. I must be brave and try again now. It's like falling off a horse. You should get back on immediately. The only problem is... Doing this is worse than falling off a horse!

Exercise 5

  1. We don’t have to finish our project tonight. We can give it to our teacher next Monday.
  2. You should start doing homework soon. It's getting late.
  3. You mustn’t write in this book. It's a library book.
  4. Dan, you have to feed your cat only twice a day. It’s very fat.
  5. You shouldn’t do all the housework. Ask your children to help you.

Exercise 1

o   Mark: Wow! It's really crowded in here!

o   Jane: That's because it's people's favourite place. We all meet our friends here and the teachers don't come because it's so noisy!

o   Mark: Is it cheap here?

o   Jane: Oh yes, really cheap. A full meal costs about f2.50 and of course, you can get snacks for around £ 1.00. A cola is about 1.20.

o   Mark: But there isn't anywhere to sit down - it's so busy.

o   Jane: Some people take their food into the park and eat it there. I usually go and sit in the playground and chat to my friends. OK, now let's go in here. Now we mustn't talk loudly inside and you mustn't use your mobile phone. Switched off?

o   Mark: Yes. It's very big, and there are lots of books. Can you take them out?

o   Jane: Yes, you can borrow books for three days, so you can read them at home. You can also borrow DVD sand CDs for a week. You can use the computers too.

o   Mark: That's good. Where next?

o   Jane: Well, now we're in the biggest place in the school. We have a big school meeting here every morning before classes - it's called assembly. Everyone has to come - that's 350 people! Twenty of those are teachers, the rest students. The head teacher gives us important information. Sometimes people come to give us speeches as well.

o   Mark: Do you ever have lessons in here?

o   Jane: Not really, apart from drama classes. Some after-school clubs happen in here too. Of course, we usually do exams in here too - but let's not think about that now!

o   Mark: No, that's a good idea. I think it's a great school. I'm glad 'm coming!
