The poem ‘Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night’ is in the form of a Villanelle, six stanzas with a simple rhyme scheme along with a complex message of the poem. The message is made clear with a number of literary devices, the most evident of which is repetition. The lines ‘Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night’ and ‘Rage , rage against the dying of the light’ are repeated throughout the poem alternatively at the end of each stanza. The lines make use of metaphor comparing death to the darkness of nightfall and life to a bright sunny day. The first stanza is an imperative call, the following four consolidate and the final stanza implores the powerful message of defiance. The poet sends a strong message to all its readers asking the people to cling to the edge of the mortal world and no matter how worthless and unproductive this fight may seem against such and inevitable reality , one cannot help but command the ferocity and fierceness of the poet who has a strong will to live. Hence, ‘ Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night’ by Dylan Thomas is a poem of revolt and rebel against the meek acceptance of death. |
