Beowulf is the most important epic poem in Anglo-Saxon culture. It was written in the Middle Ages by the Anglo-Saxons.
It recounts the deeds of the eponymous hero and it shows the values of the Anglo-Saxons society.
Beowulf is strong, loyal, generous and corageous.
When Grendel, a terrible monster, attacked Hygelac's meadhall, Beowulf is ready to help. He goes to Denmark, defeats Grendel and dieds for its beliefes.
At school we are reading some extracts from the poem.
Up to now the text has provided us with information about the supernatural that was perceived in anything people could not explain. Also the importance of old people is underlined in Beowulf lines..
Magic told people what they should or shouldn't do.
The poem also gives information about the traditions of the society in which Beowulf lived.
The narrator introduces Beowulf relying on his qualities.
He states: "there was no one else like him alive!";"he was the mightiest man on earth";"the people believed he was the strongest man one could meet"; and last but not least,he was:"high-born" and "powerful".
Beowulf is a hero. As metter of fact, he comes to the forefront. In a cinematic technique this would be called "show up".
What's more, the narrator informs the reader about Beowulf's reputation.
The poem is full of alliteration, refrains, repetitions and Kennings(a sort of rebus). This is because epic poetry was handed over from generation to generetion, so it had to be easy to remember.
