The title of the poem is Beowulf, therefore the reader understands the poem is about a men whose name is Beowulf. The poem is written in Anglo-Saxon or Old English and it is divided into sections. Since it had to be handed over orally, its form was conditioned by the possibility of its survival. As a matter of fact, the readercan notice a great use of rhyme, alliteration, simile and metaphor.
The poem is set in Denmark. In the poem the hero is mainly described by his reputation. Beowulf is a hero and like all heroes he expresses the most important values of its society: he seems to join god and a human being and his only fault is to be mortal.
The narrator does not provide his physical characteristics but describes him like his tribe sees him.The reading experience will make you know "...he was the mightiest man on earth,high-born and powerful..."The reader understands that it was God-like and generous, more sole than rare. Focusing on the verbs used in the sixth and in the seventh line (he ordered;he annunced) the reader notices the importance of this character in his environment:he does not ask but he orders,he does not propose but he announces. In the second section the narrator says that "nobody tried to keep him from going" and this strengthens the idea of power connected to the hero but it also underlines how in Anglo-saxon society fate is responsible for lots of things. Also emphasized is the trust Anglo-saxon gave to omens. While in the first part Beowulf's decisions to go to help of the king Hygelac against the monster Grendel is underlined, the second part tells of Beowulf's and his fellow men voyage.
