GSerpi - Ex. 84-85-86
[author: Gianluca Serpi - postdate: 2006-11-22]

1.READ AND EXPLAIN

- How Duncan is going to killed
Duncan is going to be murdered by Macbeth. He is going to kill the king with a dagger while the king is sleeping.
- What the original plan for the murder was?
Macbeth might have killed Duncan and blamed the grooms for the murder.
- How the execution differs from the original plan?
After he had killed Duncan, Macbeth was too scare and to smear the grooms with blood and quickly run away from there. So Lady Macbeth was forced to return there and do it by her self.

2.FOCUS ON LANGUAGE

A.1. Describe the reactions of the two characters to the murder.
Macbeth.
He is very scared by the hypothesis that someone might have heard him. He is also confused and he feels remorse and fear, he is afraid of what he did (“I am afraid to think what I have done / Look on't again I dare not”) and of what he didn’t do, for example he can’t have a blessing (“But wherefore could not I pronounce "Amen"? / I had most need of blessing, and "Amen" / Stuck in my throat”).

Lady Macbeth
She seems to be very self-confident, fearless, controlleted, with the illness necessary to kill the king. But in my opinion this is only appearance. As a matter of fact in the progress of the play she is even more confused. Her personality was every time divided into two parts: the first part with evil purpose while the second part with positive purpose. In the last linr of Lady Macbeth (“but I shame / to wear a heart so white”) the reader probably images that Lady Macbeth has got a very strong character, but with the progress of the play he understands that she was every time overcome by remorse till her suicide.

A.2. Which of these reactions strike you a being hypersensitive? In my opinion Lady Macbeth’s behaviour is really strange, probably because hers is not a typical attitude of the female figure; especially it is not the typical behaviour of a queen.

3.FOCUS ON LANGUAGE

What choice of colour and figures of speech suggest horror and show the effect o the murder of Macbeth
Shakespeare introduces some animals like the owl and the crickets that have something mysterious (especially the owl), and they are the symbol of Macbeth's intention. Then he uses onomatopoeically sound like scream to create an atmosphere where he could make Macbeth and the murderlive.

4.WHAT IS THE ATTITUDE OF THE AUDIENCE TOWARD EACH CHARACTER?

The audience could personify his self in Macbeth. We could recognise our ambition and our errors, even if we haven’t killed anyone yet. At the beginning Macbeth is also a victim of Lady Macbeth that persuaded him to kill the king. But unfortunately this doesn’t justify Macbeth actions and the audience couldn’t have a feeling of pity. On the contrary Lady Macbeth hasn’t got any justification for her behaviours. She also reproaches her husband for his fears. The audience perceives her figure almost like a monster, because she hasn’t got any emotions and emotions mean that you are alive.
