The first part of the extract is made by 16 lines. The narrator tells us about the hero. He uses adjectives and superlatives to underline his behaviour.the narrator tells:" there was no one else like him alive, he was the mightiest man on heart". Beowulf seems like a divinity.
Moreover the narrator tells us about Anglo-Saxon society. In fact he provides information about the social structure where the warrior was very important because their culture was based on war.
the society was based on courage,loyalty of the followers to their king and generosity of the king towards them.
The use the comparative "elder" is important to underline that old people were important in society.
Very important are the verbs "ordered" and "announced" at lines 5-6. They describes the social status of Beowulf.
In the 7th line the narrator uses a kenning to speak about the sea ("the swan's road"). The narrator use a simile : like the leader he was" to underline the central position of Beowulf in the society. To convey the idea of danger that beowulf and his crew had to face the narrator use a alliteraton of the letter c : captain ,a canny pilot along the coast and currents."

Situation before sailing.the first line begin with a words:"time went by", he uses this words to consents to understand that in a short time Beowulf and his crew were ready to sail.
The men make preparations for the journey and after that they launch the ship.
After that the adverb "eagerly" suggests the men were not calm, so the voyage was not easy.
In the 7th line of the second part of the poem the word will want to explain the men's disires to reach the land of the Geats. from the 9th line to the 10th line the narrator want to underline the difficults of the journey: " over the waves,with the wind behind her and the froth at her nack"
the men had to face a difficult situation.the narrator uses a simile to compar the ship with the flight of the bird.
he uses any enjambement to create reading more fast. Enjambement creates the impression of the ship's speed.
to conculde they thank god for the easy crossing on a calm sea. this explain that they are religious man.
