Medieval drama began to emerge in the 12th century, it had a religious function: the Church wanted to educate people who could neither read nor write.
The subjects of these plays were biblical stories of the old and New Testament .
Mystery plays were performed by the trade or craft guilds of the town on a movable stage wagon called "pageant" on the day when Corpus Christi feast was celebrated.
In the late Middle Ages an other form of drama became popular: the Morality plays.
They were allegoric tales with the aim of improving a moral education to common people.
Medieval drama was important because it added a human element to the religious themes of the Mysteries.
