GBredeon - Monaca vs Prioress
by GBredeon - (2009-05-28)
Up to  The Canterbury Tales and G. ChaucerUp to task document list

I am going to analyze these two characters that are similar for some features.

The first piece of information that the poet give to us is that the two nuns represent an upper rank of the Church and the society. In the monastery they are respected by the rest of the people and they give orders.

The second category regards their behaviour and their language. The prioress has good manners and she speaks French, so she is pretending to be refined. Her behaviour and her manners result affected. The Monaca's way to speak is angry and her actions are repentine.

The third aspect regards psychology. Both of them are unhappy.

People don't believe to their religious faith.

The most important difference between the descriptions of the two characters is that Manzoni feel sorry for the Monaca, Chaucer instead pull the prioress' neck. Chaucer's intention is to criticize the Church.
