THE CONTEMPLATION

 THE TITLE

The translation into Italian is "contemplazione".

The dictionary says:

  • contemplation (observation)
  • contemplation (reflection)

Taking the title in consideration my hypothesis are:

The text might talk about a reflexive moment.

I think the speaking voice is reflecting or thinking about something of his/her life.

You think over something, but not that you act.

The title of the poem makes me think of an important topic.

The text might talk about an observation.

I tried to make some hypothesis but it is difficult because while I was reading this title I couldn't imagine something particular.

DENOTATIVE ANALYSIS

This is a reflexive poem.

The speaking voice could be a man or a woman. The speaking voice may be a teenager's.

The poem tells the reader about an adolescent.

The title is The Contemplation and the text talks about a reflexive moment. The speaking voice is thinking about his/her life.

In the first stanza the speaking voice informs the reader that he/she is lost in his/her thoughts and that he/she is oblivious of the world. And so he/she says that his/her mind begins to move without a definite direction.

The second stanza starts with a linguistic deviation "Here I am", because you generally say "I am here". This deviation wants to put the subject in the central position, so the reader understands that it is a lirical poem.

In the second stanza the teenager says that he/she feels stuck in a middle position. He/she doesn't feel a child but he/she doesn't yet feel an adult. He/she is in a process of growth.

And so the speaking voice says he/she is a hypothetical adult.

(From this sentence the reader understands that this poem may be written by a teenager or a young person).

In the third stanza the speaking voice talks about the future. This person is pondering the future. The teenager would like to know where his life's journey will take him. He/she is curious.

In the fourth stanza the poet tells the reader that at the time of speaking he felt himself doubtfull, but he also felt absolutely free.

The word "Anonymous" is the end of the poem. It means that this is the symbol for any adolscent or that this teenager hides himself.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

I am now going to carry out the structural analysis of the poem The Contemplation.

The poem is made up of 4 stanzas. Each stanza has got 3 lines, but the first has got 2 lines.

The function of the first stanza is to introduce the situation: an adolescent and his feelings.

The function of the second stanza is to explain how he feels.

The third stanza tells the reader that the teenager is thinking about his future life.

The function of the fourth stanza is to communicate an his important feeling.
