ADOLESCENCE

THE TITLE

The translation into Italian is "adolescenza".

The dictionary says:

in the state that someone is in between puberty and adulthood.

immatury; immatureness

the time period between the beginning of puberty and adulthood.

Period of time

Time of life

Taking the title in consideration my hypothesis are:

The text might talk about a life's period: adolescence.

The speaking voice wants to tell something about this period of his/her life.

This period of life is important for the speaking voice.

It is a reflexive poem.

DENOTATIVE ANALYSIS

Considering the title I think it is a reflexive poem.

The poem tells the reader about the difference between the needs that you have when you are a teenager and the needs that you have when you are a grown up person.

The speaking voice is an adult. He/ she remembers his/her adolescence.

The poem describes the teenager's behaviour and the adult's behaviour.

In the first stanza the speaking voice tells that when he was an adolescent he could find some relax and peace simply sleeping beneath the moon.

In the second stanza he describes his sleep: he tells that he slept in an open space and that the peace came with sleep.

The third stanza starts with an important word: but. The reader understands that the situation changes.

In fact the speaking voice tells that when you are an adult you are divored by passion and there is nothing you can do to calm your passion. Neither drug, nor weed or wine can help you. He tells that no one of this things can bring true rest to cool his body's fever.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

The poem is made up of 3 stanzas of 4 lines each. Therefore the poem is organized in 3 quatrines.

The function of the first stanza is to inform the reader about the situation of a teenager. The speaking voice introduces a past habit of a teenager.

The function of the second stanza is to describe the teenager's sleep and his relax.

The function of the third stanza is to inform the reader about the present situation.
