MY HEART LEAPS UP

THE TITLE

The translation into Italian is "il mio cuore sobbalza".

To leap up means "sobbalzare".

I think the poem may tell about a surprise.

Your heart leaps up when you are in front of a big surprise, a great thing, a beautiful man but also when you are in front of a terrible thing.

DENOTATIVE ANALYSIS

This is a reflective poem.

The speaking voice tells the reader that his heart leaps up when he beholds a rainbow in the sky.

In the second line a colon is used: this means that the speaking voice explains why his heart fills with joy.

He tells the reader that there was this situation when his life began, it is now when he is a man and he wishes it will be in the future when he shall grow old otherwise he would rather die.

In the seven line there is a paradox: The Child is father of the Man. First of all there are two important words in this sentence: Child and Man. These words are capitalized because they are two personifications. This sentence means that the child can teach the father something: to be astonished and to become excited in front of a natural event.

At the end he wishes his days to be bound each to each by worship of nature.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

The poem is made up of 3 stanzas and it consists of 9 lines.

The function of the first stanza, rendered in the first two lines, is to explain his reaction in front of a beautiful natural event.

In the second part of the poem that coveres lines from 3 to 6 the speaking voice informs the reader that his positive reaction coveres all the stages of his life, he hopes that or he would rather die.

The function of the third stanza, rendered in the last 3 lines, is to provide the reader with an explanation for what he said about man's hability to react emotionally.
