My fellow citizens:
Function :
Obama Thanks American citizen and the ex President of America
I stand here today humbled (umiliato) by the task(compito) before us ( io devo lavorare con voi), grateful (riconoscente) for the trust (fiducia) you have bestowed, mindful (mnete piena memore) of the sacrifices borne (portare un peso) by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation (ringrazia il presidente precedente), as well as the generosity and co-operation he has shown throughout this transition.
To take oath = fare il giuramento
Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath (giurare). The words have been spoken (present perfect al passivo) during rising tides of prosperity ( periodo di grassa) and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering cloudsn ( nuvole che si raccoglievano) and raging storms( tempeste arrabbiate).
At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill (competenza) or vision of those in high office( alta carica ), but because we, the people, have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.
So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.
