Questions:

1) What is the period during which the Renaissance developed in England?

2) What does the term renaissance mean?

3) Why did the English Renaissance develop later than in Italy?

Answers:

  • 1) The Renaissance born in Italy between the fourteenth and the fifteenth century. It developed in Great Britain later, specifically during the fifteenth and the sixteenth century.

  • 2) The term "Renaissance" means revival. In fact in that period there was a revival of learning abut art, literature and philosophy.

  • 3) The Renaissance in England developed later than in Italy because Great Britain was committed to the war during the fourteenth and the fifteenth century (English fought the Hundred Years' War and the War of the Roses). Italian's influence was felt in England only when, at the end of the War of the Roses, a new road for a new monarch was opened to a new family: the Tudors. In those centuries there was a period of peace and some english intellectuals could go to Italy to attend Italian's universities, and when they return to England they could introduce the Renaissance there.
