THE EARLY MEDIEVAL PERIOD

 

go from the early Anglo-Saxon invasions in the 4th C to 1066:

 

  • Ø 410 A.D: The Romans started to withdraw from Britain because they had to go back to Rome to defend the central part of the empire.
  • Ø 5th - 6th C: Germanic tribes (Angles, Saxons, Jutes) invaded Britain.
  • Ø End of 6th C: Anglo-Saxon England began to take shape.
  • Ø 9th C: The Kingdoms had recognised the King of Wessex and England was unified under one King:

 

The most important Anglo-Saxon king was ALFRED THE GREAT, a cultured man and skilful in political and military.

In the 1016 CANUTE (a Danish leader) was crowned but in the 1035 the Anglo-Saxon royal line was restored: king EDWARD THE CONFESSOR was crowned

In the 1066 WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR arrived with the Normans (who came from Normandy, in the North of France).
