The English History
- 44 a. d. : Great Bretain was invased and dominated by the Romans
- Late IV century: Angles, Saxons and Jutes start the conquest of Britain (it was under Celtic tribes' domination)
- 597: St Augustine was sent from Rome to spread Cristianity thoughtout pagan people. Monks, bishops and missionaries went there to found monasteries.
- 787: The Vikings started repeated invasions of the country. They raided towns and settlements.
- By 9th century all 7 Anglo- Saxon kingdoms recognised one king: England was unified under one Anglo-Saxon king.
- 1066: Battle of Hasting: the Normans invaded England. William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, was the chief.
- 1170: Thomas à Beckett was murdered at Cantebury because he resisted King Henry II between struggle the Curch and the State.
- 1215: King John signed the Magna Carta. It limited the royal authority in written law (the taxes had to be levied with the consent of the barons, not only by the king alone)
- 1337- 1453: The English monarchy fought for its French possessions in the Hundred Years' War. It was important to create a national spirit.
- 1381: A widespread rebellion broke out among peasants because of heavy taxation. There was the Peasants' Revolt. After it peasants had better wages.
- 1455- 1485: the House of York and the House of Lancaster were involved in a civil war (the War of the Roses) for the thtone. The two Houses had respectively a white and a red rose as their emblems.
- 1485: At the end of the War of the Roses, the House of Tudor began to rule England with king Henry VII
