EVELINE

Exercises page 28.

  1. The main character is a girl called Eveline. She lives in Dublin with her father (he is often drunk), her brothers and sisters. Her mother has died and Eveline has promised her to "keep the home together as long as she could". Eveline loves a sailor called Frank; he wants to move by ship with her. Eveline does not know what she should do: should she stay with her family or move with Frank? She goes to the station but she has no courage to leave Dublin.
  2. a. Eveline is the protagonist. She has not a personality and is not sure about what she is going to do. The character presents a contradiction:
  • she has promised her mother to stay with her family
  • she wants to escape

b. Eveline's father is often drunk. He is not nice with his children and does not want Eveline to meet Frank.

c. Eveline's brothers and sisters are very important for her. She is a "new mother" for them.

d. Frank is a sailor who loves Eveline. The name "Frank" means sincere, pure. He is not the typical Irish man because he travels.

  1. There is a third person non omniscient narrator. Joyce uses the technique of the flash back, as a matter of fact Eveline remembers her past.
  2. Past was better than present. Dublin is a prison for people who live there.
