Textuality » 4A Interacting
Just from the title, the reader understands the topic of the speech and also Obama's wish: he would like the USA to be a more united nation.
The speech starts with a quotation from the ancient Constitution in which people undertook to reach unity; the sentence puts the focus on the aim Obama will try to achieve and it also reminds of past commons origins and ideals of all Americans: as a result the sense of belonging to the nation is reinforced.
The following sequence (Two hundred.. 1787.) has got the same function.
The question Obama connects to union is past slavery, that coincides with today's racism, because they are based on the same discriminating idea; if racial ideology persists, USA will never be completely unit.
In the sequence (The document.. reality of their time), Obama criticizes past trade of slaves and past irresponsibility in not facing resolutions, even if Constitution itself condemned actions against the ideals of equality, liberty...; people didn't practice coherently those principles due to racism, due to conviction that African men weren't respectable human beings.
Also today America is characterized by discrimination, but Obama repeats several times in the speech that throughout racial, religious, ethnical differences Americans' aim is unique, it is a better nation.
Obama believes that having the same aim can assure a total unity but only if citizens act in line with the ideals of the States, only if hopes turn into reality;
another condition is that people proceed together: Obama repeats the concept lots times in different ways, for example without distinguishing between poor or rich, young or old, but always speaking with the pronouns WE, US...
(This was one... brown as well)
After that he explains his personal view: he's faithful in the possibility of facing challenges, both because of USA's prosperity and because of his life; by confessing his faith Obama provides a positive image of America and incites other people to be like him.
Moreover he associates public situation to private experiences: as a consequence his life seems to identify with common ideals, hopes, feelings, facts... the audience senses a candidate closed to it.
His candidacy is sustained only by ideological reasons and not by the wish of a racial claim; Obama wants the listener to believe he is actually interested in common hopes. Since he also states people need unity, he convinces them of the necessity of a man like him.
In the successive passage he deals with questions emerged during his campaign, in particular about Wright's speeches criticizing the States and racism by the white.
Obama disagrees with him; however he also recognizes Wright's merits and good inclinations: he states that everybody can mistake and he has not to be persecuted at all for some vices or some errors. The opinion is a lesson for all people who keep some prejudice and spoil a nation unity.
Everywhere there are contradictions, that reflect differences in beliefs and opinions, for example in the community of the trinity in which Obama grew; also America carries contradictions, but the challenge is to face and to solve them: as a matter of fact problems USA have got today don't depend on racial aspect but concern all citizens.
Just American citizenship is the base on which you can build a union, since you don't think only of your interests but also of your nation.
After another association between America and Obama's life, the senator explains a negative inclination that has to be annulled: the mystification of the reality provokes hatred, incomprehension, and division and increases prejudice.
He invites people to use communication, extremely powerful today through Tv and Net, in a wise and honest way.
