Why is Eveline representative for Dubliners?
James Joyce is an Irish. He lived in Dublin, since he decided to travel all over the Europe. He wrote The Dubliners, a collection of short stories, including Eveline, to criticize bigotry and immobility. Dubliners are not able to make choices and decisions, to take responsibilities. To chose means to act, it’s a kind of way to give oneself a way, to understand what we want to do and what we are able to do. Eveline can be an example of such typical behaviours. She is an unfit. She is inept to take a decision. Her resolutions are completely different from what she really does. As a matter of fact Eveline is not able to make a choice about her future. She cannot do a personal point of view on what to do, because she has no suitable level of self-esteem. She always tries to find alibis not to make choices. This is the reason why I can say she is a slave of her habits. She has not the strength to take responsibilities in order to have a better life for her.
