Anna and the King – My considerations about the film
Answer the questions
- Who is the speaking voice?
The speaking voice is Mongkut’s eldest son.
- Why do tou think the director used this narrative technique?
I think he worked this way because the child has direct contact both with the king and Anna; his life will change during the film and he can see his father’s life change like the spectator can.
- Consider the discussion topics below: what are in your opinion the most important ones?
I think the most important three topics are “conflicts between cultures”, “death of loved ones“ and “love”.
- Do you agree with MESSAGES (look at the sheet)?
Yes, I do. We often find this in the film. The most simple example is when Anna tries to make the king’s son respect his punishment. After that, she clearly expresses to Mongkut her point of view.
Decide if you agree the considerations below.
1. I don’t agree because I think Anna’s problem is not that she can’t find an answer in Christianity, but that she isn’t able to comprehend the Siamese culture and the king’s choice.
2. I agree. I think in the film the two cultures are presented with equilibrium, without giving judgements.
