Exercises about Eveline

Use these questions as simply guidelines to reading and understanding:

Eveline lives in Dublin with her drunk father, her brothers and sisters. Her mother has died and Eveline has promised her to "keep the home together as long as she could". Eveline loves a sailor called Frank, he wants to move by ship with her. Eveline does not know what she should do at the end she goes to the station but she has no courage to leave Dublin.

 The characters are:

Eveline is the protagonist, she has 't a personality and is not sure about what she isn't a decision-maker. Her contradiction is that she has promised her mother to stay with her family but she wants to escape with Frank.

Evelyn's father is often drunk, he isn't nice with his children and doesn't want Eveline to meet Frank.

Evelyn is a "new mother" for her brothers and sisters.

Frank is a sailor who loves Eveline. He travels and so he isn't the typical Irish man moreover the name "Frank" means sincere.

Joyce uses the technique of the flash back. There is a third person non omniscient narrator.

The message is that Dublin is a prison for people who live there, because they are inept.
