In the first sixteen lines the narrator tells about the decision of the hero to go, from Geatland to Denmark, to the aid of king Hrothgar.

In fact his kingdom is threatened by a monster called Grendel.

The hero is a thane of king Hygelac and is also his nephew: his name is Beowulf.

Beowulf is a mighty  figure, no one else is like him in a positive connotation; he is describe in an almost god-like way.

He comes from an important family as he is the King's nephew and he has a great reputation, everybody admires him.

His main characteristics are generosity   and solidarity, which are also the typical values of the Anglo-Saxon culture.
