Reading the poem the intelligent reader understands that Anglo-Saxon society was organized into a hierarchical structure. At the top was the king, after him the thane, the warriors and at last the villains. The population was composed by seamen, sailors and warriors. Old people was respected by the rest of population. They spoke Old English. They had a code of values based on courage, loyalty, generosity and solidarity. They were pagan, they believed in omens and in the supernatural.
