Talk about the different between the use of the stream of consciousness and the interior monologue:
• The interior monologue is often used first person singular and present tense, and thus reflects recognition by the thinking subject and presents a precise formulation of the speech.
There are three types of interior monologue:
1. Indirect interior monologue: is characterized by the presence of the narrator in the story, the fixity of the character, as opposed to the dynamic nature of consciousness.
2. Direct interior monologue: is free of introductory phrases such as "he thought", etc ..., by syntactic-grammatical structures and a chronological and logical order of thought.
3. Extreme interior monologue: is used by Joyce in "Finnegan's wake" (The vigil Finnegan). The text has no characters or plot or intended in the traditional way, and consists entirely of words from sounds but often meaningless phrases organized in ungrammatical and without punctuation.
1. Mrs. Dalloway
The reader is in direct contact with the mind of Mrs. Dalloway, but this is the mediation of the external narrator. He introduces the thoughts and ideas of the characters.
There are two sequences, the narrative sequence is expressed by a narrator in third person, then at a point of view, the sequence is expressed by the reflexive point of view of Molly, the narrator in the third person disappears in the mind of the subject.
2. Ulysses
The subject of the speech is an "I" that we read the words, is "Molly's monologue", taken from "Ulysses" by Joyce. There is a mediation-syntactic grammar, punctuation or spelling rule, and the series of thoughts is not ready to be communicated, is chaotic and messy, some sentences are often incomplete. The speech proceeds for associations of ideas which makes the text somewhat difficult to read and understand.
3. Finnegan's Wake
There is no syntax and vocabulary is invented. Time sequences, and narrative structures are gone, the plot is abolished. The story begins in the mind of the protagonist while he sleeps.
The use of interior monologue:
1. An immediate intuition of the mind of the character showing his hand rational and irrational, experiences and most intimate feelings.
2. The presence of the narrator is limited.
• The stream of consciousness is used to represent the thoughts of the characters as they have in their mind. There is no mediation of the narrator.
Joyce was influenced by psychoanalytic theories of Freud, who first rationally analyzes the unconscious.
Grammatically, this style is characterized by lack of punctuation, invented words, and variations of language registers.
Domande:
• Come viene compreso il significato?
The use of the interior monologue help the reader to understand what the writer want tell us and in particular, the reader is able to make some supposition about the ideas and the thought of the characters.
• Come fà il lettore a comprendere in assenza della sintassi?
The use of the stream of consciousness does not help the reader to understand the novel because , if the reader fails to understand a passage of narration, the reader should start again and pay attention not only to the concatenation of the words but to the different meanings and connections that the narrator wants to make.
• Qual'è l'effetto prodotto?
Thanks to the stream of consciousness the reader is not able to understand a lot because it is difficult read and understand the human consciousness, especially when it is taken by a novel.
• Qual'è la posizione del lettore?
The use of the stream of consciousness does not allow the reader a clear and explicit reading of the event but a confusion of things sometimes meaningless and this is precisely the blurring of thoughts of the character. The use of the interior monologue rather helps the reader understand the facts, the ideas and the vision of the world of the character and so he can make some supposition about the problem that are expressed in the novel.
