THE STUART (1603-88)

 

 

 

JAMES I

  • On Elizabeth's death, James I was crowned.
  • England and Scotland were peacefully united under the same king.
  • Practised the theory of absolute monarchy.
  • Belived in the divine right of kings.
  • Tried to rule without the help of the Parliament.
  • Hostility in Parliament.
  • New restrictions were passed against Catholics.

CHARLES I

  • On James I's death, the throne passed to his son Charles I.
  • Shared his father's conviction (the divine right).
  • Ruled the country as an absolute monarch.
  • Hostility in Parliament.

CHARLES II

  • Civil War
  • Cromwell and the Commonwealth
  • Restoration
  • Two opposite organized groups in Parliament: the Tories (alliance between the Crown) and the Wighs (emerging industrial and commercial classes).

JAMES II

  • On Charles' death the throne passed to his brother,  James II
  • Imposed the Catholic religion
  • The result was the Revolution of 1688
  • The king was deposed without shedding any blood
