Now I'm going to analyze the second section of the extract on page 57.

In the second part the narrator describes Beowulf and his crew's departure. They were ready to leave their land and to face several dangers. In this section the poet focus the attention about the description of places, landscapes and important actions.

In the first line the narrator explains to the reader the time and place of the voyage. The alliterative sound "ai ", in the sentence "time went by", consents to understand that in a short time Beowulf and his crew were ready to sail.

After that the adverb "eagerly" suggests the men were not calm, so the voyage was not easy.

In succeeding lines the narrator makes the reader understand that Beowulf's crew were made up by sailors but also warriors. In fact from line 20 the narrator describes what crew make in order to get ready for the voyage: they loaded a cargo of weapons. Therefore most frequent activities were sailing and fighting at that time. Moreover the narrator underlines the strong-willed of warriors to bring to a close their mission.

After that the poet describes the voyage. The description of the voyage is as speedy as the voyage. The narrator uses run on lines to create the speed of the ship. To create a mental picture in the reader's mind the narrator uses a simile:

-"she flew like a bird"

The poet compares the ship to a bird flight. Moreover the ship is personified: it is described using the subject pronoun "she".

At last Beowulf and his crew came to the end of their voyage, they moored the ship and thanked God. So the reader can understand they were religious people.

In conclusion , in the last 3 lines the poet uses onomatopoeic words like "clash" and "trash" to recall the noise of metal and therefore the arrive of Beowulf in Hrothgar's land.
